Method: Shake ·
Glass: Rocks glass, half Tajín or salt rim ·
Time: 4 min ·
Difficulty: Beginner ·
Family: The Sidecar Family
Ingredients
- 2 oz Blanco Tequila (100% agave)
- 0.75 oz Cointreau or Orange Liqueur
- 1 oz Passion Fruit Purée (unsweetened, or fresh pulp)
- 0.75 oz Fresh Lime Juice
- 0.25 oz Agave Syrup (adjust only if the purée is very tart)
How to make a Passion Fruit Margarita
- Run a lime wedge around half the rim of a rocks glass. Dip the moistened half in flaky salt or a chili-lime seasoning, then fill the glass with fresh ice.
- Add blanco tequila, orange liqueur, passion fruit purée, fresh lime juice and agave syrup to a cocktail shaker with ice.
- Shake hard for 10 to 12 seconds, until the shaker is fully chilled and the passion fruit is lightly aerated.
- Strain over the fresh ice, add a lime wheel and a restrained spoonful of passion fruit pulp, then serve immediately.
Garnish
Half Tajín or salt rim, lime wheel and a small spoonful of passion fruit pulp.
Pro tip
Passion fruit should taste aromatic and tart, not like candy. Start with unsweetened purée or fresh pulp, then taste the balance before adding the small agave adjustment. A half rim keeps the seasoning optional with every sip.
History of the Passion Fruit Margarita
Passion Fruit Margarita is a contemporary tropical Margarita variation rather than one fixed historical formula. Its appeal comes from keeping the classic tequila, orange liqueur and lime structure intact while adding concentrated passion-fruit pulp for a vivid perfume and sharply tangy finish. It belongs naturally with the modern fruit-forward Margarita family: bright enough for blanco tequila, but more aromatic than a standard citrus build.

Variations
- Margarita — Return to the classic tequila, orange liqueur and lime original.
- Spicy Margarita — Bring in a jalapeño or chili accent for a fruit-and-heat version.
- Mezcal Margarita — Use mezcal for a smoky counterpoint to the tropical fruit.
- Mango Margarita — Use mango nectar for a rounder tropical fruit expression.
- Guava Margarita — Use fragrant pink guava for a floral-tropical fruit expression.
