Why this balance works
Passion fruit and grenadine both have loud flavours, so the orange juice is doing useful middle-palate work here rather than simply adding sweetness. Lime should make the passion fruit feel fresh, not turn the drink sour. Start with a modest quarter ounce of simple syrup; many passion fruit purées already include enough fruit sugar that a full half ounce makes the grenadine feel sticky. The crushed ice opens the drink as it melts, so the shaken base should be concentrated.
Technique to keep
Shake this before it reaches crushed ice. Passion fruit purée needs enough agitation to blend cleanly with grenadine, while a glass full of crushed ice is for service and gradual dilution—not for making the mix. Straining over fresh crushed ice keeps the drink bright and gives you a clean way to adjust texture without adding more syrup. Use a short mint sprig as aroma, not a forest of garnish.
