History of the Skeleton Key
The Skeleton Key was created in 2011 by bartenders at Roast, the acclaimed Detroit restaurant helmed by chef Michael Symon. Designed as an approachable yet deeply flavorful autumn highball, its name nods to the heavy iron skeleton keys associated with historic estates and seasonal lore, quickly spreading across craft cocktail bars nationwide.

Variations
- Rye Skeleton Key — Substitute high-rye bourbon with a spicy bottled-in-bond rye whiskey for an earthier, drier profile.
- Botanical Skeleton Key — Swap bourbon for London Dry gin, highlighting the crisp interplay between juniper and elderflower.
- Mexican Skeleton Key — Replace bourbon with reposado tequila, introducing agave warmth and subtle oak notes alongside the ginger and citrus.
