Ingredients
- 1 oz Gin (London Dry — Beefeater or Tanqueray)
- 1 oz Sweet Vermouth (Carpano Antica or Cocchi di Torino)
- 1 oz Campari
How to make a Negroni
- Add gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari to a mixing glass with ice.
- Stir for 30 seconds until well-chilled.
- Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube.
- Express an orange peel over the drink and drop it in.
Garnish
Orange peel, expressed and placed in the glass.
Pro tip
The quality of your vermouth makes or breaks this drink. Always refrigerate opened vermouth — it's wine, and it oxidizes. Replace every 4-6 weeks.
History of the Negroni
Legend has it that Count Camillo Negroni walked into Caffè Casoni in Florence in 1919 and asked the bartender to strengthen his Americano by replacing the soda water with gin. The bartender also swapped the lemon garnish for orange to signal the different drink.
