History of the Navy Grog
While the name derives from Admiral Edward Vernon's 1740 naval order watering down sailors' daily rum rations with water and citrus, dubbed grog, the modern cocktail version was popularized by Donn Beach at his legendary Don the Beachcomber restaurants in the 1940s. Beach elevated the humble naval drink into a sophisticated, multi-rum masterpiece that became a cornerstone of mid-century tiki culture, later adapted by Trader Vic and other cocktail pioneers.
