Pro tip
This is a Last Word riff — same equal-parts template, completely different flavor profile. The mezcal smoke, Aperol bitterness, and Chartreuse herbal complexity create something that shouldn't work but absolutely does. Use Yellow Chartreuse specifically — Green is too intense here.
History of the Naked and Famous
Created in 2011 by Joaquin Simo at Death and Co in New York. It's a riff on the Last Word (gin, Green Chartreuse, Maraschino, lime) but swaps every ingredient for a bolder, smokier alternative. It became one of the most influential modern cocktails and helped popularize mezcal in bars worldwide.
Flavour profile
Smoky, Bitter, Herbal, Citrus
Variations
- Last Word — The original: gin, Green Chartreuse, Maraschino, lime
- Division Bell — Mezcal, Aperol, Maraschino, lime
- Final Ward — Rye, lemon, Maraschino, Green Chartreuse
