Pro tip
Ginger beer vs. ginger ale: ginger beer is brewed and fermented, giving it a much spicier, more intense ginger flavor. Ginger ale is just carbonated water with ginger flavoring. Always use ginger beer for a Mule.
History of the Moscow Mule
Created in 1941 as a marketing collaboration between three people who each had a product to sell: John Martin (Smirnoff vodka), Jack Morgan (ginger beer), and Sophie Berezinski (copper mugs). It was essentially a marketing stunt — and it worked so well that it launched vodka's dominance in America.
Flavour profile
Spicy, Ginger, Citrus, Refreshing
Variations
- Kentucky Mule — Replace vodka with bourbon
- Mexican Mule — Replace vodka with tequila
- Dark & Stormy — Replace vodka with dark rum (Gosling's Black Seal)
