Ingredients
- 2 oz White rum (lightly aged or column-still)
- 0.5 oz Peach liqueur (or peach brandy)
- 0.75 oz Fresh lime juice (tart and freshly squeezed)
- 0.5 oz Honey syrup (equal parts honey and warm water)
- 10 Fresh mint leaves (plus extra for garnish)
- 2 tbsp Fresh pineapple (diced)
How to make a Missionary's Downfall
- Add all ingredients along with one cup of crushed ice into an electric blender.
- Blend at high speed for approximately five to ten seconds until thoroughly incorporated and frosted.
- Pour the contents directly into a chilled snifter or tiki glass, retaining all crushed ice.
- Top up with additional fresh crushed ice to maintain a high, frosty crown.
- Garnish with a fresh mint sprig and a pineapple wedge before serving.
Garnish
Garnish with a fresh mint sprig and a pineapple wedge.
Pro tip
Pulse the ingredients briefly in the blender rather than liquefying them entirely to preserve the bright texture of the fresh mint and pineapple. Use high-quality crushed ice to achieve the signature frost on the outside of the glass.
History of the Missionary's Downfall
Created by legendary bar owner Donn Beach at his famous Hollywood establishment, Don the Beachcomber, the Missionary's Downfall emerged in 1937 during the height of early American tiki culture. While popular lore often credits the drink as a hangover remedy devised for a complaining customer, historians note that many mid-century origin stories were embellished for theatrical marketing. Unlike rum-heavy punches loaded with heavy citrus juices, this refreshing creation uniquely balances botanical white rum, peach liqueur, and fresh mint, establishing a sophisticated template for modern tropical mixology.

Variations
- Strained Botanical Downfall — Shake all ingredients vigorously with crushed ice and fine-strain into a chilled coupe without ice for an elegant, crystal-clear presentation.
- Overproof Island Downfall — Substitute overproof white Jamaican rum for half of the white rum base to add funky ester complexity to the peach and mint profile.
