Pro tip
The original Pat O'Brien's recipe uses their proprietary passion fruit mix. For a home version, passion fruit puree mixed with a splash of orange juice gets you close. Don't skip the dark rum — it needs that molasses backbone to balance all the fruit.
History of the Hurricane
Born at Pat O'Brien's bar in New Orleans during World War II. The story goes that liquor distributors forced bar owners to buy cases of rum (which nobody wanted) for every case of whiskey. Pat O'Brien needed to move rum fast, so he created this fruity punch that masked the spirit. Named after the hurricane lamp-shaped glass it was served in.
Flavour profile

Variations
- Category 5 — Add 151-proof rum float on top for extra punch
- Virgin Hurricane — Skip the rum, double the juices, add ginger ale
