Glass: Chilled highball glass ·
Time: 4 min ·
Difficulty: Beginner ·
Family: Tiki & Tropical
Ingredients
- 60 ml London dry gin (Preferred high-proof botanical gin)
- 22.5 ml fresh lime juice (Freshly squeezed)
- 15 ml simple syrup (1:1 sugar to water)
- 4 dashes Angostura bitters (Plus floated dashes for garnish)
How to make a Gin Swizzle
- Add the gin, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup into a tall highball glass.
- Fill the glass two-thirds full with crushed ice and add two dashes of Angostura bitters.
- Insert a swizzle stick or bar spoon between your palms and spin rapidly to churn and chill the drink while frosting the glass.
- Top up with more crushed ice to form a frosted dome.
- Apply a generous crown of aromatic bitters across the top of the ice and serve immediately with a straw.
Garnish
Garnish with a crown of aromatic bitters floated across the crushed ice surface and a mint sprig.
Pro tip
Use finely crushed pebble ice to ensure rapid dilution and proper frost formation on the outside of the glass. Spinning the swizzle stick vigorously aerates the drink and layers the bitters throughout.
History of the Gin Swizzle
The swizzle technique originated in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean, where locals used stripped branches of the swizzling stick tree to churn drinks with ice. While nineteenth-century cocktail manuals frequently documented rum swizzles across West Indian watering holes, gin variants emerged as British colonial tastes adapted local Caribbean cooling methods. Historic provenance remains somewhat debated among cocktail historians regarding whether gin or rum predominated the earliest documented iterations, though by the late Victorian era, iced gin swizzles were well established in maritime and tropical outposts.
