Ingredients
- 2 oz Dark Rum (Gosling's Black Seal (traditional) or Myers's)
- 0.5 oz Fresh Lime Juice
- 4-5 oz Ginger Beer
How to make a Dark & Stormy
- Fill a highball glass with ice.
- Add lime juice.
- Fill with ginger beer to about three-quarters full.
- Float the dark rum on top by pouring it slowly over the back of a bar spoon.
- Serve with a stir stick — let the drinker mix it themselves for the 'stormy' effect.
Garnish
Lime wedge.
Pro tip
The float is the whole point of this drink — the dark rum sitting on top of the golden ginger beer looks like a storm cloud. Pour it slowly over the back of a spoon to keep the layers separate.
History of the Dark & Stormy
The Dark & Stormy is Bermuda's national drink and is actually trademarked by Gosling's — technically, a 'Dark & Stormy' must be made with Gosling's Black Seal rum. The name comes from the drink's appearance: the dark rum floating on ginger beer looks like a storm cloud over the sea.
