Crisp garden cucumber meets botanical gin and effervescent club soda in this refreshing highball.
Method: Muddle, shake, and strain ·
Glass: Highball glass ·
Time: 4 min ·
Difficulty: Beginner ·
Family: The Highball Family
Ingredients
- 2 oz Dry gin (Botanical-forward)
- 4-5 slices English cucumber
- 0.75 oz Fresh lime juice
- 0.5 oz Simple syrup (1:1 ratio)
- 3 oz Club soda (Chilled)
How to make a Cucumber Cooler
- Muddle the cucumber slices gently in the bottom of a cocktail shaker to release their fresh juices.
- Add the dry gin, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup to the shaker with ice cubes.
- Shake vigorously for approximately 10 seconds to chill and thoroughly combine the ingredients.
- Double strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a tall highball glass filled with fresh ice.
- Top with chilled club soda and gently stir once from bottom to top to integrate.
Garnish
Garnish with a long cucumber ribbon pressed against the inside of the glass.
Pro tip
Muddle the cucumber gently rather than pulverizing it into a puree, which can introduce bitter seed notes and make double straining difficult. Use a wide ribbon of cucumber inside the glass for an aromatic nose on every sip.
History of the Cucumber Cooler
While highball-style cooling drinks pairing botanical spirits, fresh garden produce, and carbonation have long populated warm-weather cocktail culture, the specific lineage of the Cucumber Cooler remains contemporary and undocumented in classic bartending compendiums. Popularized across modern cocktail bars and culinary blogs during the craft cocktail renaissance of the 2000s, this refreshing concoction reflects the broader consumer shift toward vegetable-forward ingredients in mixology. Although exact origins or credited inventors are unrecorded, the drink evolved naturally as bartenders sought lighter, hydrating alternatives to heavy sours and overly sweet coolers.
