- 1 cup crushed ice (to fill)
How to make a Caipiroska
- Place the lime wedges and superfine sugar into a heavy-bottomed old-fashioned glass.
- Muddle the limes firmly to release their juices and dissolve the sugar into the citrus oil.
- Fill the glass completely with crushed ice.
- Pour the vodka directly over the ice.
- Stir thoroughly from the bottom up to combine ingredients and chill the drink before serving.
Garnish
Garnish with a fresh lime wheel and a straw.
Pro tip
For the best texture and dilution, use freshly cracked crushed ice rather than standard cubed ice, which ensures proper chill and prevents rapid over-dilution.
History of the Caipiroska
While the exact origins of the Caipiroska remain somewhat obscure, it emerged as a popular international twist on Brazil's national cocktail, the Caipirinha, following the global proliferation of vodka in the late twentieth century. By substituting neutral vodka for traditional cachaça while retaining the core preparation of muddled fresh limes and sugar over crushed ice, the drink offers a clean, crisp profile that highlights the vibrant citrus. Although often marketed as a contemporary bar innovation across European and South American resorts during the 1980s and 1990s, precise documentation of its first commercial appearance continues to be debated among cocktail historians.
