Pro tip
Opt for a 100% agave blanco tequila to provide crisp, earthy backbone notes that cut through the sweet richness of the coffee liqueur. If you prefer a softer, oak-driven profile, substitute reposado tequila.
History of the Brave Bull
The Brave Bull emerged during the mid-20th-century cocktail boom as a Mexican-influenced variation of the popular Black Russian. While widely credited to standard American cocktail evolution rather than a single documented inventor, the drink substituted vodka with tequila to create an earthy, agave-forward profile. Historical accounts suggest its popularity grew alongside the rise of imported Mexican spirits in American bars during the 1950s and 1960s, though exact documentation of its first appearance remains sparse. Bartenders embraced the simple two-ingredient formula as an effective way to showcase rich agave character against sweet coffee liqueur.

- Mexican Bulldog — Top the drink with a splash of cola for effervescence, bridging the Brave Bull and the Batanga.
