Difficulty: Beginner ·
Family: The Sidecar Family
Ingredients
- 1 oz Cognac or Brandy
- 1 oz Dark Crème de Cacao
- 1 oz Heavy Cream
How to make a Brandy Alexander
- Chill a coupe glass.
- Add cognac, crème de cacao, and cream to a shaker filled with ice.
- Shake firmly for 12 to 15 seconds until the tin is very cold.
- Double strain into the chilled coupe.
- Grate a small amount of fresh nutmeg across the surface.
Garnish
Freshly grated nutmeg.
Pro tip
Use real cream, not milk. Milk makes the drink loose and can split against the alcohol; cream gives it the texture it needs.
History of the Brandy Alexander
The Alexander began as a gin-and-cocoa drink around the turn of the twentieth century. The brandy version became the enduring favorite, particularly as a dessert drink after dinner.
Flavour profile
Chocolate, Creamy, Warm, Nutty
Variations
- Alexander — Use London Dry gin instead of cognac for the original style.
- Coffee Alexander — Add 1/4 oz coffee liqueur and reduce crème de cacao slightly.
- Frozen Alexander — Blend the ingredients with a cup of crushed ice for a dessert-style serve.
