How to make a Alexander
- Chill a coupe glass in the refrigerator or with ice water.
- Add the cognac, brown crème de cacao, and fresh cream into a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes.
- Shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds to chill and properly emulsify the cream.
- Fine-strain the mixture through a Hawthorne strainer into the chilled coupe glass.
- Garnish the surface with freshly grated nutmeg and serve immediately.
Garnish
Sprinkle fresh ground nutmeg on top.
Pro tip
Use heavy or fresh cream with a high fat content for a richer mouthfeel, and always grate the nutmeg fresh for maximum aromatic depth.
History of the Alexander
Created in the early 20th century, the Alexander gained massive popularity during the Prohibition era when sweet cream masked the harsh taste of bathtub gin. It later transitioned to brandy or cognac as its primary spirit, becoming the definitive Brandy Alexander celebrated worldwide.
Flavour profile
Creamy, Rich, Chocolate, Smooth
Variations
- Gin Alexander — Substitute the cognac with an equal measure of London Dry gin for the original, botanical pre-Prohibition style.
- Brandy Alexander — Use Spanish brandy or American brandy instead of cognac for a sweeter, fruit-forward profile.
- Coffee Alexander — Replace half of the crème de cacao with coffee liqueur or espresso for a mocha-inspired variation.
