8 Best Kahlua Cocktails (Beyond the White Russian)

Kahlua (and coffee liqueur in general) is one of those bottles that sits on most people's shelves unused except for the occasional White Russian. But it actually works in a ton of drinks — it works in everything from after-dinner sippers to brunch drinks to frozen cocktails.
If you've only ever used it for White Russians, here are the other drinks worth making with that bottle.
Espresso Martini
The drink that made coffee liqueur cool again. Vodka, fresh espresso, and Kahlua shaken into a frothy, caffeinated cocktail. It's the most Instagrammed drink of the decade and it's genuinely delicious.
2 oz vodka, 1 oz fresh espresso (cooled), half an ounce Kahlua, half an ounce simple syrup. Shake hard for 15 seconds. Strain into a coupe. Three coffee beans on top.
The key is fresh espresso, not instant coffee. And shake HARD — the foam is what makes this drink special. Weak shaking = flat, sad Espresso Martini.
White Russian
The Dude's drink from The Big Lebowski. Vodka, Kahlua, and cream over ice. It's a dessert cocktail that's unapologetically indulgent.
2 oz vodka, 1 oz Kahlua, 1 oz heavy cream. Build over ice in a rocks glass — pour vodka and Kahlua first, then float the cream on top. Stir gently or leave layered.
Use half-and-half instead of heavy cream for something lighter. Use oat milk for a vegan version that's surprisingly good.
Black Russian
A White Russian without the cream. Just vodka and Kahlua over ice. It's stronger, less sweet, and more coffee-forward. For people who want the coffee flavor without the dairy.
2 oz vodka, 1 oz Kahlua. Build over ice in a rocks glass. Stir. That's it.
Mudslide
A frozen White Russian with Irish cream added. It's basically an adult milkshake — thick, creamy, chocolatey, and goes down way too easy.
1.5 oz vodka, 1 oz Kahlua, 1 oz Baileys, 1 oz heavy cream, 1.5 cups ice. Blend until smooth. Drizzle chocolate syrup inside the glass before pouring. Whipped cream on top.
Revolver
A modern classic: bourbon, Kahlua, and orange bitters. It's an Old Fashioned riff where coffee liqueur replaces the sugar, adding depth and coffee notes to the bourbon.
2 oz bourbon, half an ounce Kahlua, 2 dashes orange bitters. Stir with ice, strain into a coupe. Flame an orange peel over the top. This is a bartender's favorite — simple but sophisticated.
Kahlua & Cream (Simple)
Sometimes you just want something sweet and easy. 2 oz Kahlua, 1 oz cream, over ice. It's a nightcap that tastes like coffee ice cream in liquid form. No shaker needed, no technique required.
Coffee Liqueur Alternatives
Kahlua ($22) — The classic. Sweet, with vanilla and caramel notes alongside the coffee. Works in everything.
Mr. Black ($30) — Less sweet, more intensely coffee-forward. Better in Espresso Martinis where you want coffee to dominate. Australian, craft-made.
Patron XO Cafe ($25) — Tequila-based coffee liqueur. Drier and less sweet than Kahlua. Interesting in Margarita variations.
Homemade — Steep coffee beans in vodka for 48 hours, strain, add simple syrup to taste. Cheaper and you control the sweetness.
